A Sport with Ranch Roots and a Modern Twist
Breakaway roping is a fast-paced and exciting rodeo event that originated as a variation of tie-down roping, designed to showcase the skills of cowgirls and increasingly, cowboys. Its roots lie in the practical ranch work of roping calves, but unlike tie-down roping, breakaway roping emphasizes speed and finesse without the need to dismount and tie the calf.
The event has grown rapidly in popularity, especially in women’s rodeo competitions, and is now a featured event at major rodeos across North America, including the Calgary Stampede.
The Rules: Lightning-Fast Precision
In breakaway roping, the competitor must rope a running calf as quickly as possible, but unlike tie-down roping, the roper does not dismount or tie the calf.
- The Start:
- The roper and horse wait in a box beside the calf chute.
- The calf is released and given a head start.
- The Chase:
- The roper pursues the calf at full speed.
- The Catch:
- The roper throws a loop of rope around the calf’s neck.
- The Breakaway:
- The rope is tied to the saddle horn with a string designed to break away.
- When the calf runs and pulls the rope taut, the string breaks, signaling the end of the run and stopping the timer.
- Timing:
- The clock starts when the calf leaves the chute and stops the moment the rope breaks free.
- Penalties:
- If the roper misses the calf on the first throw, a five-second penalty is added.
- If the rope breaks prematurely or the roper breaks the barrier early, the run is disqualified.

Breakaway Roping at the Calgary Stampede
For the first time since 1979, the Calgary Stampede has added a new event to its official rodeo lineup: Ladies Breakaway Roping. In 2025, this lightning-fast event makes its debut on the main stage at the Stampede Rodeo, marking a significant milestone for both the sport and women in rodeo. Presented in partnership with the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), breakaway roping is now a fully sanctioned event with prize money equal to the other major Stampede competitions—$310,250 awarded over ten days—and all earnings count toward competitors’ world standings. The addition of breakaway roping to the official Stampede Rodeo reflects the Stampede’s commitment to celebrating diversity and elevating women’s events, offering fans a thrilling new showcase of speed, skill, and horsemanship at the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth.
Safety and Sportsmanship
Breakaway roping is considered one of the safer rodeo events, with minimal physical contact between rider and calf. The calves are carefully selected for size and health, and strict rules ensure their welfare throughout the competition. The event emphasizes horsemanship, timing, and respect for the animals involved.
