The excitement of a rodeo depends on two key factors: the talent of the competitors and the quality of the animals—horses, bulls, and steers. The Calgary Stampede Rodeo showcases the very best of both, bringing together world-class competitors and exceptional livestock. Every afternoon at 1:30 p.m., cowboys and cowgirls put their skills and determination to the test in electrifying events, all leading up to the ultimate showdown on Sunday at the World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo.

New to Stampede in 2025, Breakaway Roping is a high-speed event where cowgirls rope a calf and stop their horse abruptly, snapping the rope free to stop the clock.
Riders race in a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels at lightning speed; hitting a barrel adds a costly five seconds to their final time.
This classic rodeo event tests balance and timing as riders spur in rhythm with a bucking bronc for eight seconds while holding onto a single rein.

A cowboy leaps from his horse at full speed to wrestle a steer to the ground, aided by a hazer who keeps the animal running straight.
Cowboys rope a calf, dismount mid-run, and tie three legs in a rapid display of precision, teamwork, and traditional ranch skills.
Riders hold on for dear life as they attempt to stay atop a powerful, bucking bull for eight seconds with one hand on the rope and no room for error.

You Probably Didn’t Know
Long before the Stampede became the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, the Heavy Horse Pull was already turning heads. First held in 1886 during the Calgary Agricultural Exhibition, this horsepower showdown is still one of the most riveting—and powerful—events on the calendar.
Invented by Stampede founder Guy Weadick in 1923, Chuckwagon Racing quickly became the marquee event of the Stampede. Today, it’s not just a local thrill—it’s a full-blown competitive circuit with a World Championship on the line.
Don’t snooze on the Calgary Stampede Talent Show. If you witnessed it in 1992, you would have seen a young unknown singer named Paul Brandt step on stage. He walked away a winner—and went on to become one of Canada’s biggest country stars of all time.
Every single day during Stampede, Calgarians and visitors line up for one of the city’s most beloved traditions: the Stampede Pancake Breakfast. It started in 1923 and has since grown into a flapjack frenzy—over 200,000 pancakes are served up annually alongside crispy bacon, eggs, and Western hospitality. And yes, it’s totally free.
There’s no official count on how many people swear by them, but we do know this: over 2 million mini donuts are devoured every year at Stampede. These sweet, cinnamon-sprinkled treats are a bite-sized icon of the midway.
For 10 days each July, the Stampede grounds transform into the third largest city in Alberta. With daily attendance topping 120,000 people, it even surpasses the population of Red Deer. That’s one wild western takeover.
Beyond the rodeo, the Stampede has evolved into one of the largest music festivals in Canada. With 10 main stages hosting artists across every genre, from global superstars to rising local acts, it’s a 10-day sonic celebration like no other.
1951 marked the only time Calgary hosted the Stampede twice in one year. When then-Princess Elizabeth visited in October, she mentioned she’d love to see the iconic event. Calgary didn’t hesitate—they threw her a special, mini Stampede fit for royalty. Eight years later, in 1959, she returned as Queen and experienced the full spectacle firsthand.
Despite oppressive federal laws banning Indigenous cultural celebrations at the time, Guy Weadick and key allies like Pat Burns made sure Indigenous peoples were front and center at the inaugural 1912 Stampede. Their inclusion was revolutionary—and they’ve been a vital part of the festival’s spirit and storytelling ever since.
The Calgary Stampede isn’t just a rodeo. It was the first major celebration of western heritage in the world—melding rodeo action, agriculture, music, food, and community into one unforgettable event.
A Legacy of Western Heritage Since its debut in 1912, the Calgary Stampede has celebrated Western culture, community, and tradition. Known as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, it combines thrilling rodeo competitions, world-class entertainment, and cultural showcases, drawing over 1 million visitors annually.
